What does the OHS “End the Hunger” Program do?

The “End the Hunger” program of the Okeechobee Chapter of NHS is a city-wide childhood nutrition program which aims to ensure that each child in the program has adequate food over the course of the weekends during the school year, when school lunch is not available and parents or guardians may not be able to afford three full meals a day.  The program serves a city with an overall poverty level of 21%, and a poverty level of 39% for children between the ages of five and seventeen years old; therefore, the assistance that the “End the Hunger “program provides is desperately needed.

Currently, the program provides six meals per weekend for 155 elementary school children from October to May.  The children in the program are ranked in terms of need and identified by school personnel at their individual schools; however there are many more students in need of meals who could be served by the program.  In order for the “End the Hunger “program to bridge the gap, the program needs to be able to provide meals to more children.  Therefore, it needs to expand in terms of the number of students it currently serves and the length of time it serves them.  The current financial status of the program, however, will not allow this:  the cost to feed the current number of students in the program, ensuring that each student has the proper nutrition required for proper development and academic achievement over a seven month period, is approximately 21,000 dollars per year.

The program was initially started by a one-time grant of $25,000 that was awarded to Okeechobee High School in May of 2015.  There has not been any consistent funding available to run the program.  The NHS students do hold fundraisers every year, but those fundraisers only total between 3000 and 5000 dollars per year.  Other donations have trickled in from the community, but not enough to sustain the program for another year.  Currently, the initial grant money is running out and without additional funding, it will be impossible to keep the program running through the next school year.  In addition, it will be impossible to expand the program.  With additional funding, “End the Hunger” would be able to run from September to May every year, and could grow from thirty to forty students per school, an expansion of 33%.

The grant will allow the “End the Hunger” program to maintain a vital source of food to the children in our community who need it most.  The grant will allow us to expand the demographics of the program which it cannot currently cover, and to ensure that the children in the program are given the nutrition they need for proper development and academic achievement.  This is a program that was started because of the vision of a teacher and her students.  It is run by the students at the high school.  The students raise money for the food, pack the food, and coordinate the delivery of the food to each elementary school in the county on Fridays during the school year.  Ultimately, the goal would be, not only to service the children during the school year, but also during the summer months as well.  Please help us to continue and expand our program, “End the Hunger”.
